The Grumpy Goat Soap Company

I am The Grumpy Goat Soap Company, a small business based in a small town south of Durham, UK, owned by me, Mel Nicholson-Walton.

Why Grumpy Goat?  I have a small child who thinks that goats are hilarious, especially when they do the head-butting thing, and when he gets into a huff, he pulls the funniest face and I end up calling him my little grumpy goat, I thought that it was only fitting to name my company The Grumpy Goat Soap Company.

I started making melt and pour soaps and cold process soaps as a hobby in 2020 (thank you pandemic), these were then gifted to friends and family but after much encouragement from my husband and friends, I decided to start making these professionally to sell to the general public.

I have loved soaps from an early age.  I would receive so many for my birthday, and they were just too pretty to use, so as you can imagine, I amassed quite a collection.  My favourite was a strawberry soap from The Body Shop.  The smell was always so strong, and I loved the feel of the soap in my hands.

My little boy has the same interest in soaps as I do.  His favourite is my Monkey Farts soap, it’s made using a Melt and Pour soap base and I’ve added some fun and vibrant colours and the scent is really punchy and it’s his go to soap for bath time.

The more I have learnt about soaps the more I have become interested in the natural soaps, these are called Cold Processed Soaps and this involves chemicals that will great a base and then you add in your additional ingredients such as colours and fragrances.

This has been a fun learning journey to get to a soap base that works, and after many attempts and research, the end product is finally at the high standard that I am striving for.

In the beginning I created some truly awful soap accidents (even blocking the kitchen sink to my husband’s horror!), and probably ruined more soaps than I have created at that point.  I wish I had taken pictures of the ones that went wrong, but I was so panicked at the time I didn’t think about it!

But all my hard work and perseverance has paid off, and I am now able to offer high quality handmade soaps from my home to yours.
